Ahimsa
Non-Violence
Card Meaning & Symbolism
Ahimsa (अहिंसा) is the foundational ethical principle meaning non-violence in thought, word, and action. It extends beyond physical harm to include emotional violence, environmental destruction, and violence toward oneself through self-criticism.
Historical Context
Ahimsa, the first and fundamental yama in Patañjali's system (Yoga Sūtra 2.35), appears throughout Vedic, Buddhist, and Jain literature as the foundation of spiritual ethics. The Mahābhārata states that ahimsa is the highest dharma. Gandhi's interpretation of ahimsa as active compassion influenced modern yoga's understanding of non-violence.
